Soul Food Junkies

Byron Hurt, the filmmaker behind Hip Hop: Behind Beats and Rhymes (a must-see if you haven’t yet), is doing another thoughtful documentary, this time exploring the origins of soul food in Black America and its implications today. It’s due to come out in January 2012…I’ll be looking forward to this. Here’s a sneak peek below.

  1. Yes! I love a good documentary so I can’t wait. When i researched soul food for a paper during undergrad, it seemed as if African Americans today are eating the same way the slaves did back then. They needed that high caloric diet to have the energy to complete field work, but we don’t. The slave diet became a part of tradition. The good thing is we can alter certain ingredients and cooking methods so we can still enjoy the foods we love. I’ll definitely check this film out!

Excellent point! A lot of people don’t want to give up soul food for the sake of health, but there are many low-fat and healthy alternatives that we can use to make healthier (and just as tasty) soul food dishes. I remember hearing about a healthy soul food restaurant with a vegan slant, and it had great reviews. I wish I remembered the name of the restaurant, but it definitely shows you that it can be done.
      Thanks for commenting love!

I’ve never heard of this film maker and consequently haven’t seen his work. Looks interesting. I’ll have to check it all out.
